Hi greenthumbs. It’s dirtgirl here!

Are you ready to Go Wild for Maths? We’re doing the maze challenge! Explore direction and stump your friends with an amazing stick maze.

watch the maze episode

Watch the ‘maze’ episode on ABC iview to see how to make your maze.

what you need to gather

Before you start, gather the following things:

  • a camera

  • paper and pencil

what to collect outside

Collect lots of big sticks and branches to make your maze.

They can be all sorts of different shapes and sizes.

how to make your maze

There’s no one way to do this challenge, but here are some ideas to get you started.

  1. Choose a big, flat spot for your maze. Put all of your sticks in a big pile nearby.

  2. Pull out your pencil and paper. Have a go at designing and drawing your maze. Think about what direction the path will go ... forwards, backwards, left and right.

  3. Build your maze by arranging your sticks on the ground. Make sure it has a way in and a way out. It might take a few goes to get it right.

  4. Test your maze by trying it out. Re-adjust your sticks if you need to. Then challenge your friends or family to walk the maze and find their way out!

  5. Don’t forget to snap a photo of your stick maze.

  6. Once you’ve finished, you can pick up your sticks and put them back where you found them. Or, you can leave your maze where it is and re-design a trickier one tomorrow!

fun fact

The world’s largest hedge maze is 9km long! Amazing!
